Depuis mes débuts dans l’accompagnement en hypnose, je croise beaucoup d’émotions. Et parmi celles-ci, il y en a une qui me touche souvent plus que les autres : la colère.
Tout d’abord parce que personnellement, j’ai toujours eu un rapport particulier avec cette émotion. Au tout début de ma vie, je la subissais. Mais au fil des années, j’ai appris à l’écouter pour ce qu’elle était et à m’en servir pour mieux avancer dans ma vie. Ainsi, la colère est devenue mon émotion phare (au sens littéral). Elle me guide dans mes réflexions et mes actions au quotidien. Oui, je suis en colère tous les jours. Mais sachez que je le vis très bien. Et mon entourage aussi.
Ensuite, la colère me touche plus particulièrement en tant qu’hypnologue car en séances j’accompagne de nombreuses personnes qui se sentent complètement démunies face à cette émotion, alors qu’elle pourrait être une si belle ressource pour elles.
Ainsi, cela faisait un moment que j’avais envie d’écrire un article sur la colère. Quand j’ai vu que le podcast Émotions, avait consacré un épisode entier à la colère (« La colère est-elle vraiment mauvaise conseillère ? »), je l’ai écouté immédiatement. Et j’ai tellement aimé cet épisode que j’ai eu envie d’en partager quelques morceaux avec vous, tout en y ajoutant mon regard d’hypno. C’est donc une écoute subjective que je vous propose dans cet article. Je vous invite bien évidemment à écouter l’épisode dans son intégralité.
Commençons d’abord par une proposition de typologie des relations à la colère que j’ai pu observer dans ma pratique :
Colère et honte
Souvent quand la colère est évoquée en séance, c’est d’abord à demi-mot. Ou sous la forme d’un aveu coloré d’un sentiment de honte ou de gêne.
« Qu’est-ce que ça vous a fait à ce moment-là dans cette situation X ? »
« Bah … j’étais vraiment… vraiment … »
« Oui ? »
« … bah je sais pas, un peu en colère peut-être ? »
« Un peu ? »
« Non, très en colère. Mais c’est pas bien. »
Cela me donne alors l’impression qu’il y a dans notre société une sorte de hiérarchie des émotions autorisées, et que la colère est tout en bas du classement.
« Ce n’est pas bien/ Je n’ai pas le droit / Ce n’est pas gentil d’être en colère ».
Je rencontre ainsi beaucoup de personnes qui ne s’autorisent pas à vivre leur colère. Pire parfois, elles ont tellement pris le pli qu’elles ne se rendent même plus compte qu’elles sont en colère. Elles sont dans le déni de leur émotion.
La colère en mode haute intensité
Mais il existe aussi le contraire. Des personnes qui viennent à moi en se décrivant comme « colériques ». Elles sont en colère, tout le temps, pour tout. Dans leur quotidien s’expriment des colères très souvent intenses, teintées de rage, parfois même de violence. Il y aurait en elles comme des braises puissantes qui se réactiveraient au moindre souffle d’irritation.
En outre, ces personnes sentent qu’il y a quelque chose qui ne sonne plus juste au travers de tous ces pics. Elles se rendent bien compte (ou leur entourage leur fait savoir) qu’elles ne sont plus capables d’exprimer leur colère avec nuances. Comme si le curseur de cette émotion s’était bloqué sur « MAX ».
Le confinement de la colère
Et il y a ces personnes très en colère mais à l’intérieur. A un moment dans leur vie, il y a bien longtemps, une colère est née. Mais elle était tellement puissante, elle criait tellement de choses qu’elle a été désignée « émotion non grata » et a été mise en confinement. Depuis lors, chaque nouvel événement provoquant de la colère rejoint le cercle des colères emprisonnées.
Pourtant, elles font « coucou » de temps en temps, on sait qu’elles sont là mais non elles ne sortiront pas. Et elles s’accumulent. On les met alors encore plus au fond, et quand au bout d’un certains temps, il y a en un peu trop, on tasse encore plus.
Pourtant, ces personnes savent très bien qu’il y a un volcan en sommeil à l’intérieur qui menace de se réveiller. C’est pourquoi parfois, elles aimeraient bien que ça sorte quand même mais il y en a tellement maintenant… que ça fait peur.
« Non je ne peux pas dire à cette personne que je suis en colère car si je le fais, j’explose. Vraiment. »
Et puis, elles ne savent plus trop où est la sortie. Par conséquent, quand le trop plein du trop plein arrive (la fameuse « goutte d’eau »), le volcan de lui-même se réveille et sort par tous les trous. Et souvent, ce n’est ni au bon moment, ni au bon endroit, n’est-ce pas ?
« Mais bon là, il « fallait » que ça sorte. »
Ainsi, les coulées de lave détruisent tout sur leur passage sans distinction, ne laissant qu’un paysage lugubre figé dans la cendre. Et ça fait peur, tellement peur que cela valide à nouveau la croyance que la colère « ce n’est pas bien » et donc on confine à nouveau.
Une condamnation historique de la colère
Mais, d’où nous vient ce rapport si particulier à cette émotion ?
Dans le podcast, le sociologue Eric Gagnon nous explique que nous sommes les grandes héritières et héritiers d’une image archi négative de la colère.
Il cite ainsi deux sources historiques et culturelles qui marquent encore aujourd’hui notre rapport et nos attitudes face à la colère (la nôtre et celle des autres) :
- L’Antiquité
Dès cette époque, cette émotion fait l’objet d’une première réprobation, car elle est associée à une maladie qui enlaidirait et dominerait le corps et l’âme.
- Le Christianisme
A ce moment-là, la colère est désignée comme l’un des sept pêchés capitaux et est décrite comme une manifestation d’orgueil, d’amour propre, de vanité.
Commencez-vous à sentir le lien avec « je ne dois pas être en colère car ce n’est pas gentil » et « je ne suis pas quelqu’un de bien si je suis en colère » ?
Une trop grande confusion entre la colère et la rage
Le podcast se poursuit avec le psychologue Salomon Nasielski qui décrypte la différence entre la colère et la rage. Ainsi, selon lui, la première est un simple signal émotionnel qui est là pour nous informer qu’il y a quelque chose qui ne nous convient pas dans une situation spécifique. Alors que la rage, elle, est entretenue et devient plus globale. Elle fait ainsi perdre le contact avec la cause de la colère qu’on ressent et nous focalise davantage sur une personne ou un groupe d’individus.
Pour lui, si on tient compte du signal émotionnel de la colère et surtout si on nous a appris quoi faire avec, on ne rentrerait probablement jamais en rage. D’ailleurs, il rappelle qu’en psychiatrie, la rage est l’état le plus extrême du spectre de la colère.
Un signal émotionnel important
En séances, je me rends bien compte que le problème est que peu d’entre nous sommes éduqués sur le fait que la colère est un signal important qui a son rôle à jouer, tout aussi crucial que la peur ou la tristesse. Au contraire, la plupart des personnes semblent avoir appris à avoir peur de leur colère. Moi la première, encore aujourd’hui dans certaines situations.
Pourtant, selon moi, c’est vital de recevoir intérieurement l’information qu’une situation ne nous convient pas. Et surtout de comprendre qu’on a le droit de l’utiliser pour poser ses limites pour soi-même.
J’apprends donc aux personnes que j’accompagne à accueillir leur colère et à entendre ce qu’elle a à leur dire en la questionnant :
Qu’est-ce qu’il raconte ce bouillonnement intérieur ?
Qu’est ce que ce cœur qui s’emballe me dit ?
Ce feu, il crépite furieusement pourquoi, ( pour quelle raison) ? Pour quoi (dans quel but) ?
Qu’est-ce que cette colère attend de moi ? Qu’est-ce qu’elle attend de l’autre ?
De quoi ai-je besoin ? Quelle demande puis-je donc formuler ?
Qu’est ce que je décide pour moi si la situation ne change pas malgré ma demande ?
Une énergie qui mobilise
Ainsi, pour moi, la colère nous invite à revenir d’abord à nous-mêmes pour nous poser la question de ce qui nous dérange et pour identifier notre besoin sous-jacent. Car rappelez-vous que nous seuls sommes responsables de nos émotions et de nos besoins.
Dans le cadre de cette émotion-là, ce n’est pas l’autre qui nous met en colère. C’est nous qui choisissons de nous mettre ou non en colère. Et oui … reprenons notre responsabilité. L’autre n’a pas le pouvoir d’appuyer sur nos boutons émotionnels. Par ailleurs, comme je le dis souvent en séances, nous nous devons d’être là pour nos émotions.
C’est donc à nous d’utiliser l’énergie de la colère pour faire quelque chose de l’ordre de la réparation face à la situation qui n’est pas bonne pour nous. Car comme le rappelle Salomon Nasielski, la colère étant liée à l’adrénaline, elle nous fournit une énergie non seulement corporelle, mais aussi une énergie de réflexion, de décision, d’engagement dans l’action pour faire changer la situation.
Trois pistes pour un bon usage de la colère
1/ Assumer les signes de sa colère
Et oui, tout simplement. Tout simplement ? Je ne crois pas…
Car parfois, les personnes que j’accompagne en séance me disent qu’elles n’osent pas « se mettre en colère ». Comme s’il y avait une différence entre « être en colère à l’intérieur » et « se mettre en colère pour que la personne en face voit ma colère ».
En effet, ce n’est pas toujours facile de montrer son feu bouillonnant, surtout pour des personnes qui n’ont pas été habituées à montrer leurs émotions. Et dans le cas de la colère, nous avons bien vu que cette émotion tire en plus des boulets historiques de condamnation qui nous pousseraient bien vite dans la catégorie « colérique », « hystérique », « capricieux.se ».
Pourtant, ces signes extérieurs de colère sont très utiles pour réguler nos interactions sociales et sociétales. En effet, si je contiens ma colère, comment mon interlocuteur pourrait-il savoir que je ressens cette émotion ? A trop vouloir la contenir, ne risque t-elle pas de se transformer en rage voire en violence, envers l’autre comme envers moi-même ?
Ainsi, et cela peut sembler paradoxale, assumons les signes intérieurs et extérieurs de notre colère pour participer à la création d’un monde moins violent.
2/ Apprendre à faire des demandes
Si la colère est un mouvement qui repousse (une situation) elle donne aussi l’énergie de trouver une autre voie. Vous pouvez donc utiliser cette énergie en apprenant à faire des demandes concrètes de changement soit à vous-même si la situation est liée exclusivement à vous, soit à l’extérieur si la situation qui vous dérange n’est pas liée qu’à vous.
Comme le précise Cyrielle Bedu dans le podcast, ces demandes sont à faire avec force et détermination mais sans agressivité ni violence (on parle d’assertivité), en vous basant sur le besoin sous-jacent à votre colère. Cependant, formuler des demandes aussi fertiles, ce n’est pas inné, ça s’apprend. Et comme tout apprentissage, souvent au début, on est nul. Soyez donc bienveillant.e avec vous-même. Et ne lâchez rien, poursuivez vos efforts. Vous allez y arriver.
Ainsi, vous vous autoriserez à vivre votre colère, tout en allant au-delà des plaintes et des reproches, pour passer à l’action et atteindre le stade du changement. Est-ce que vous vous rendez compte à quel point cela peut totalement faire évoluer votre rapport à la colère quand vous commencez à vous dire que c’est une énergie créatrice de changement ? Et non une énergie destructrice ?
3/ Apaiser ce qui doit être apaisé
Il s’agit ici d’une piste très personnelle. Je suis arrivée, au fil de ces dernières années, à un questionnement automatique et salvateur de chacune de mes colères :
Est-ce que j’ai les moyens ou la force de faire en sorte que ma colère ait une chance d’être créatrice de changement (positif) ?
Si la réponse est NON, je me dois de trouver le moyen d’apaiser très vite cette colère pour me protéger (moi et mes proches) et ne pas m’épuiser inutilement. Aller faire du sport, faire de l’auto-hypnose, crier dans un oreiller, pleurer un bon coup, prendre du Rescue… A chacun.e de trouver sa façon d’apaiser sa colère.
Par contre, si la réponse est OUI… Là, je suis intransigeante avec moi-même et je me mets en mode action (je considère la réflexion, la prise de décision, la mise en route de quelque chose comme de l’action) . Je me transforme ensuite en bulldozer du changement. Je ne lâche rien tant que je n’ai pas atteint ce que ma colère attend de moi. C’est pourquoi cette émotion m’est si chère. C’est un de mes drivers les plus puissants. Et cela me convient très bien comme ça.
Alors bien sûr, parfois malgré mes efforts, rien ne change. Je réalise à ce moment-là que j’ai fait tout mon possible dans ma zone d’influence mais que le reste ne suit pas. C’est à ce moment-là que je fais le deuil de ce qui ne peut être changé, je coupe et je cherche le moyen de m’apaiser.
A retenir
Voici quelques messages clés qu’il me semble important de garder pour améliorer la relation avec sa colère :
- La colère est une magnifique émotion, quand elle est bien accueillie et entendue.
- Elle est tout aussi utile que les autres émotions, elle a un rôle à jouer dans votre spectre émotionnel.
- Souvent, elle fait son travail. C’est vous qui ne faites pas le vôtre… Et oui, ça pique !
- C’est une ressource intérieure précieuse qui vous guide dans ce qui est juste ou pas pour vous. Elle vous demande ainsi de vous engager pour vous-même.
- Parfois, c’est ok de ne pas savoir tout de suite ce qui se passe pour soi quand on est en colère. Il faut donc prendre le temps de se poser avec elle et de rentrer en dialogue intérieur. Échanger avec une personne de confiance ou un.e accompagnant.e peut aussi vous aider à comprendre votre colère.
- Après avoir tout essayé dans votre zone d’influence pour changer ce que vous aviez besoin de changer, il faut couper et vous apaiser.
Et vous, c’est quoi pour vous la colère ? Quelle est la relation que vous entretenez avec cette émotion ? Comment repérez-vous qu’elle est là ? Combien de fois ces derniers jours vous est-il arrivé de la ressentir ? Est-ce qu’il y a des situations où vous vous surprenez à être toujours irrité.e, agacé.e, aigri.e ? Quel driver pourrait-il y a avoir à la place ?
